INTERNSHIPS

United Stages’ Internship Program provides students and recent graduates with the opportunity to learn more about themselves, the business world and career possibilities that exist within the performing arts marketing and publishing industry. All internships are 15-25 hours per week for 12-15 weeks.

Design Interns. Design Interns will do design and layout work, assist in the creation of design workflow and assist in the creation of templates. Must be proficient in InDesign. Knowledge of XML is a plus. Must be organized with good design and layout skills. Compensation: $10 per hour. We will be happy to assist with obtaining academic credit.

Research Interns. When everyone else in the room is scratching their heads, the clever researcher says, “I don’t have the answer either, but I know how to find it.” The ability to research information is critical for all jobs, as it touches all aspects of every business. A good researcher will be a naturally curious, detail-oriented investigator. Research Interns for United Stages will gather the information needed to carry out various aspects of the business, and may build or update databases of that information. Ongoing research includes identifying interest groups for audience development and identifying advertising and producer sales leads. Other research may include producer contacts, NYC theater venues, marketing industry information, events, legal questions, business operations, etc. Must be proficient in using the Internet and Microsoft Excel. Compensation: No pay. Meals and monthly unlimited MetroCard are provided. We will be happy to assist with obtaining academic credit.

Marketing & PR Interns. Marketing and PR interns will execute ongoing marketing and PR campaigns on behalf of United Stages’ performing arts clients. Some of the work may involve event planning, research, maintaining client contact, building databases, meeting with the press and producers or representing United Stages at performances or events. Interns are able to develop necessary business and client building skills. Applicants must have some knowledge of marketing and public relations, either through actual experience or through college courses. Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (especially Photoshop) is a plus. Compensation: No pay. Meals and monthly unlimited MetroCard are provided. We will be happy to assist with obtaining academic credit.

General Interns. General Interns work in various departments to explore their interest in particular aspects of the business and to obtain a greater knowledge of the overall operations. General Interns are able to develop necessary business and client building skills. They gain an understanding of the theatrical publishing and marketing industry, and have the opportunity for building long-term relationships. Specifically, interns may work in the following areas: marketing, sales, editorial, public relations, client services, billing, manufacturing, distribution and administrative. Activities within these areas may include writing marketing and advertising copy, editorial writing, copyediting and proofreading, event planning, research, printing and binding production, maintaining client contact, building databases, photography/videography assignments, and representing United Stages at performances and events. Compensation: No pay. Meals and monthly unlimited MetroCard are provided. We will be happy to assist with obtaining academic credit.

REQUIREMENTS (FOR ALL INTERNSHIPS)

To be considered for a position, applicants should have completed one academic year within a degree program, have strong interpersonal skills, be self-motivated, and have a history of community service and personal success. Applicants should have a strong sense of follow-through, as well as excellent written and verbal communication, and must be able to read, write and speak English fluently. Must have experience with Microsoft Office Suite and be very familiar with how to use the Internet. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite is also an asset, as is an interest in theater and other live performance.

CURRENT PROJECTS

United Stages is close to accomplishing some major goals for 2006: the complete renovation of our website and the creation of audience development and membership programs. Additionally this fall we will begin our annual audience survey and we’ll be launching new script titles with a kick-off event at the Drama Book Shop in November. Interns working with us in the fall of 2006 will have the opportunity for input and involvement on these exciting projects. Goals for 2007 include the refinement and growth of current operations, plus the development of a new magazine aimed at reaching out to a subscription and non-subscription base of performing arts enthusiasts in NYC and beyond.
